I Heart Megan

Being related to Megan is exactly like being related to a high school prom queen...because she is one. She wasn't the cheerleader-narcissistic-stuck-up-with-the-hottest-boyfriend prom queen. She was the funny-and-cute-everybody-thinks-she's-their-best-friend-awesome prom queen.
She's everything one could ever hope to find in a sister-in-law and friend: she's hilarious, spiritual, forgiving, clever, stylish, intelligent, humble and rad.
8 years ago I married Megan's best friend and she quickly forgave me for it. She puts up with my unfounded opinions and overbearance with grace and continues to show me how a real woman carries herself through the stresses of life.
There's a lot to like about Megan. She's quick with a joke and even quicker with making you feel loved and accepted. She has lived her life always trying to be a good person and has a list of accolades to prove it (ask her about 'em). She loves her family more than life itself and has courageously endured the challenges of bearing and caring for three kids within 20 months, including premature twin boys. Through it all she's shown everyone how amazing she is, while proving that her prom queen title was not given in vain (meaning, she's still freakin' hot!)
I love thinking back on the time Joel, Cam, Meg and I videotaped ourselves playing American Idol. Cam played Ryan Seacrest (with a measuring spoon microphone) and Simon (wearing my black t-shirt to play the part). Joel played Randy (pillow under his shirt and voicing a pitiful Southern accent). I played Paula (with too much lipstick and clapping that involved 16 cubic feet of space and ALL of my arms). Megan played the contestant wearing an ugly pink dress and singing the most FOUL rendition of Who's On The Lord's Side, Who? that I've ever heard. She screamed out the words like a scary old lady giving a dramatic interpretation at a fireside. It was dead-on, astounding, and unparallelled. (I was going to upload the video here, but Joel, who has an obviously purer love for his sister, talked me out of it.) Since then, Megan and I have taken to leaving each other voice mail which includes picking a popular song (i.e. You're So Vain) and singing it the way some old lady would sing it. It's really funny and it's the reason I check my voice mail everytime I come home.
So, when I was given the assignment to bring a dessert to her birthday party, you know I had to bring cupcakes. (she loves 'em) I took cues from the idea I found in Hello, Cupcake and produced these beauties. I don't really like desserts that involve more than three steps, but these were for a special occasion. My kids helped me a bit and it was a fun project. They provided enough success that I'd be willing to do something similar in the future.
There's no cake under these flowers, but brownies. If I really loved Megan I would have used this AMAZING recipe, but instead I used a box mix to make these. After they cooled, I secured the oreos with a little frosting, added some frosting leaves, petals and a ladybug.
Happy Birthday, Megan!

Just in case any of you harbor a shred of respect for me, here I am in all my shame (and in my closet) singing an example of the kind of thing I leave on Megan's voice mail. Would you like me to leave one for you? If so, give me an idea of the song you'd like to hear. Also, if you have birthday wishes for Megan, go here.

Oh, my heck. I laughed so hard I had tears - TEARS I tell you! You sitting in your closet belting out that horrible tune was the best start to my day ever! Thank you for that. Please, sing me Dancing Queen.

PS - those cupcakes turned out amazing - I am very impressed. Where did you find those cute lady bugs?!
I also love Megs, she is a dear and I loved growing up watching her be the popular one - in a very down-to-earth-and-cool popular way.

Wait! Was that song about me? I laughed my guts out. Good job Beffy!! And people--those were, hands down, the cutest cupcakes I have ever seen. I felt guilty eating mine, but I did. Yum! I love you Megan, Happy Birthday. I love you Beth. You are a keeper.

You Roskelly Girls, my life is better because I know you. All of you are so dang talented. Way to go on the cupcakes Beth, and your singing, well you are AWESOME!

I don't really know Megan, other than I know who she is. But I hope she has a great birthday too.

You have no idea the trepidation I felt in posting my video. But I'm trying to be the kind of person who enjoys a good joke, even if it's at my own expense. It's incredibly embarrassing, but if it brings ya'll enjoyment, (as it does me) it's worth it.

Oh Beth, none of those things you said about me are true, except that I really did have 3 kids in 20 months which was insane. Still is, come to think of it.

But having that movie clip of you singing in the closet is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I was crying and laughing so hard that Maggie came over to me, got right in my face, and said "Mom. No laughing. Mom." very sternly-like.

The cupcakes were UH-MAZING. And Beth, you know I never make anything without a box mix. Despite my mother hinting around like "Oh, I just love from-scratch cakes..."

My goodness. I'm the lucky one having you as a relation.

Oh and Queen M, you were my Phase counselor at the 6th grade phase retreat. So any self esteem that I have, I totally attribute it to you. And also to seeing Miss Gibbs dance the Black Cat and totally get into it.

Beth, those cupcakes are unbelieveable. SO cute! Good for you! I am always so afraid to try complicated, cute things like that---but you executed them beautifully. Must be all the scrappin' you do with that sister of yours.

And, your song was lovely. Just lovely. What a delight.

Beth,
That post did a few things for me... first of all, it made me wish I had known Megan better. What an awesome sister-in-law! Second of all, it reminded me exactly why I always loved hanging out with you... you're nice as can be, super talented, and freakin' funny! Thanks for that!

You are so BRAVE! I loved your song, so awesome. I'd like you to call me and sing a Neil Diamond song, any one of them. And I'm DYING to see the American Idol video! I can just hear Megan now, belting out Who's on the Lord's Side. I love it!
I'm very impressed with your cupcake skills too. I need some lessons from you on how to do the frosting stuff. I'm terrible.
I wish you and Megs were both my real sisters. But since we can't have the blood, I'm just going to officially adopt you. K?

You are my hero! What guts! After hearing you comment on your blog post I had no idea what to expect (and believe me, I didn't expect this.) When I came to the bottom, I found a SWEET piece of music that I will turn to anytime I need a little pick me up.
(p.s. It's Jenny, I'm stilling trying to get my commenters name to show up right, so if it doesn't you will know who I am. Ugh, me and technology. SETH!!)

Those cupcakes are awesome! Also why didn't I know about this singing?! You should have called me when it was my b-day last month. I mean I guess you still can. Loved you. I heart you!

The cupcakes were gorgeous-o, and the song - ahhhhhh, song. I think you were very brave to do this rendition EVEN IN YOUR CLOSET. I am left with one burning question: am I an old woman? wince wince.

While you are right about all you've said about Megs, the fact that she loves you so VERY much tells me that YOU are pretty cool you own seff. And the song just proved it.

I just had to come back today and listen to the song again. I think its like a chocolate bundt cake, even better the second day (IF THAT'S EVEN POSSIBLE.)

And another thing. I don't know if I should admit this, but your singing is WAY better than mine because I have to pull up the lyrics on my computer... cause I don't know words to songs... you can just sing from your heart. That's talent.

I love this post!!!!!!!!!! Beth you are one talented woman! From cupcakes, to singing to making people feel special, you do it all. I have that Hello, Cupcake book too and I adore it! I am going to try and make the circus cupcakes when we go to the circus in May. I may be calling you for help! Anyway, great job singing...I can't wait for Joel's birthday song! Hint, hint! ;-)

And Megan, if you come back to read this, I think you Williams girls are the cream of the crop. Happy late birthday!!!
